Cayman Islands Company Search

  • Written by   Astra Trust
  • Last updated

Company searches in the Cayman Islands are carried out through the General Registry, which maintains the Companies Register and issues search reports on a per-company basis. Searches are ordered and paid for individually rather than browsed, and different reports provide different levels of detail.

This guide explains how the Cayman register works, the routes available for searching it, what each report contains, and how to verify a registry-issued document.

Table of Contents

Key takeaways

  • Searches are paid and company-specific.
  • You need the exact registered name or the registration number before you can search.
  • Basic Information confirms status; a Detailed Search Report covers the constitutional position; directors are ordered separately.
  • Members, beneficial owners and accounts are not on the searchable register.
  • Every report is a snapshot — authenticate third-party extracts using the file number and authorisation code.

The General Registry and the Companies Register

The Cayman Islands General Registry maintains the Companies Register, alongside separate registers for partnerships, trusts, and non-profit organisations. It is headed by the Registrar of Companies and operates under the Companies Act (2025 Revision), the Limited Liability Companies Act, the Exempted Limited Partnership Act, and related legislation.

The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority is a separate body with a separate function. CIMA licenses and supervises banks, insurers, fiduciary services providers, and regulated funds. Company registration and the maintenance of the Companies Register sit with the Registrar.

Different ways for searching in the register

The Registry’s online payment and search service

The General Registry operates an online payments and search platform, which requires users to register an account before transacting.

Registered users can order:

  • Basic Information in the form of the core registry record for a named company
  • List of Directors for a company
  • Detailed Search Report which is a more detailed document

Payment is accepted by Visa and Mastercard. Searches are company-specific, so the company name or registration number is needed before a search can be placed.

Applications for legitimate interest access to beneficial ownership information, and for access restriction, can also be paid for through the same service.

CORIS

The Cayman Online Registry Information System is available to service providers licensed by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, and gives those users remote access to information on the companies they are engaged to administer.

The related Corporate Administration Platform (CAP) serves corporate services teams filing with the Registrar. Both operate on a subscription basis. User set-up costs CI$125 per person, with monthly access charges beginning at CI$125 for a single user acting as registered office for no more than ten entities, and scaling with user numbers.

Where CORIS-level information is required, it is generally obtained through a licensed service provider.

Direct request to the General Registry

Company searches can also be requested from the General Registry office. This is used primarily where a matter requires a certified or specialised document that is not covered by the online service.

In other jurisdictions the same process is different, see our guide to conducting a BVI company search for comparison.

Running the Cayman Registry search

1. Confirm the exact legal name or registration number

Searches are matched on the entity as registered, so abbreviations such as “Ltd” for “Limited”, bracketed jurisdiction suffixes, and punctuation affect results. The registration number is the more stable identifier where it is available.

2. Register for an account on the Registry’s online service

Identity details and a payment card are required at this stage.

3. Select the report type

Basic Information addresses existence and status. The Detailed Search Report covers the constitutional position. A directors list is ordered separately.

4. Pay and download

5. Authenticate the extract

Registry-issued search reports carry an entity file number and an authorisation code, which allow the document to be validated online. Where a report has been supplied by a third party and is being relied on for onboarding or diligence, authentication is the standard check.

Information available from the Company Search

A registry search will generally confirm:

  • Company name and registration number
  • Company type — exempted company, ordinary resident company, non-resident company, Cayman Islands LLC, foundation company, or segregated portfolio company
  • Date of incorporation or registration
  • Current status, including whether the company has been struck off
  • Registered office address
  • Directors, where the directors report is ordered
  • A summary of the constitutional documents, in a Detailed Search Report

Information held outside the register

Several categories of company information are maintained at the registered office or on a separate government platform rather than on the searchable register:

  • Register of members
  • Register of mortgages and charges, and minute books
  • Beneficial ownership information
  • Financial statements

The information about Utimate Beneficial Owners is filed to the Cayman Islands Government’s centralised beneficial ownership platform, with access governed by the regime described below.

There is no general obligation for a Cayman exempted company to file accounts with the Registrar. Entities regulated by CIMA report under their own regimes, and separate obligations may arise under the economic substance requirements.

Where ownership information is required for a transaction, it is commonly obtained through disclosure from the counterparty, supported by representations and warranties in the transaction documents.

Key Takeaway
Searches of the Cayman Islands register are company-specific rather than keyword-based, so the exact registered name or the registration number is needed before a search can be placed. Any report obtained is a snapshot of the record at the moment it is issued. Obtaining a fresh certificate of good standing is standard practice, and any registry document received from a third party should be authenticated against the register using the entity file number and authorisation code printed on it before it is relied upon.

Company registration numbers

Each Cayman company is allocated a registration number on incorporation. Because names can change while numbers do not, the registration number is the more reliable search key, and it is the figure to take from a certificate of incorporation rather than from the name used in correspondence.

The registration number, together with the authorisation code printed on a registry-issued document, is also what enables that document to be authenticated online.

Struck-off and pending strike-off companies

A company that has not paid its annual fees or met its filing obligations may be struck from the register. The General Registry publishes a list of struck-off companies, and separately a list of entities pending strike-off.

A struck-off company may be restored wiht assistance of the registered agent in defined circumstances, subject to the applicable conditions and fees.

Beneficial ownership information of Cayman companies

The current regime derives from the Beneficial Ownership Transparency Act, 2023. The substantive changes took effect on 31 July 2024, with enforcement of the new requirements commencing in January 2025.

beneficial owner is, broadly, an individual who holds directly or indirectly more than 25% of the shares or voting rights in the company, or who has the right to appoint or remove a majority of the board. Where no individual meets those tests, the beneficial owner is the person exercising significant influence or control by other means, excluding those acting solely as manager, director, or adviser. Non-compliance with the filing requirement can result in strike-off and in company assets vesting in Government.

Access to the information is governed by two sets of regulations.

Legitimate Interest Access

The Beneficial Ownership Transparency (Legitimate Interest Access) Regulations, 2024 came into force on 28 February 2025. They allow applications to the Registrar for access to beneficial ownership information on a specified legal person, where the applicant demonstrates a legitimate interest and provides evidence linking the entity to money laundering, its predicate offences, or terrorist financing. Applications are assessed by the Registrar.

Beneficial Ownership Information Access Restriction

The Beneficial Ownership Transparency (Access Restriction) Regulations, 2024, in force since 9 December 2024, allow a beneficial owner to apply for protection from disclosure. Where a restriction is revoked, the individual is notified and has 28 days to appeal before the information becomes available to legitimate interest applicants.

On 18 March 2026 the Beneficial Ownership Transparency (Legitimate Interest Access) (Amendment) Regulations, 2026 revised the application fee from US$30 to US$75, and introduced a US$250 annual administrative fee for applicants making multiple access applications across any number of legal persons within a twelve-month period.

Checking Name Availability

Confirming that a proposed company name is available is a separate exercise from searching for an existing company. Name availability is checked and the name reserved with the Registrar as part of the incorporation process, normally by the licensed service provider handling the formation.

Where the objective is to form a company rather than research one, the name check is the first step of the process set out in our guide to Cayman Islands company formation, which covers documents, fees, and timeline.
